Tips for Living with Children
- Hanging play furniture should be properly
anchored to the ceiling.
- Never leave children unsupervised in or
around bathtubs, pools, or even water buckets.
- Keep toxic substances and dangerous tools
well out of reach from children.
- Ensure no electrical cords lying around in
which children could get caught. To prevent electrocution, cover
electrical outlets with plastic safety protectors. Keep children away from
the cooker stove or oven. When cooking on the range top, turn the handles
of all pots and pans inwards, out of reach of curious hands. Use a range-top cover to cover heating elements when not in
use.
- Be aware that children can easily get
entangled in strings from blinds. Ensure that baby’s crib does not have
any loose strings. Tip: On pillow cases with strings, tie a knot at one
end of each string so that the threads cannot be unraveled and played
with.
- Install safety gates at staircases and
safety catches on doors and windows to prevent children from falling.
Never leave your child unattended on a balcony.
- Keep small parts, which can cause choking,
away from children under the age of three.
- Children like to play in small areas, make
sure they do not have access to spaces without proper ventilation.
- Adults and children alike can easily slip
on wet surfaces. Be sure to use a bathmat in the tub and in other wet
areas. It is also good idea to make sure carpets are slip resistant.
- Attach heavy or high furniture to a wall
to prevent it from tipping over. And remember, even a low cabinet can be
tipped over if a child pulls out the lower drawers and climbs on top of
them.
